The Forum is a key part of Gloucester’s ongoing city-centre regeneration, featuring a purpose-built digital campus, designed to attract technology-led businesses and drive long-term investment into the city. The development includes high-spec office space, a 4-star hotel, retail units, and a multi-storey car park.

Overview

We carried out the full groundworks package on this complex city-centre site. Our works included enabling activities, pile mat construction, deep drainage, reinforced concrete foundations, and service trenching. External works covered road base construction and paving, planter excavation, the install of monolithic feature benches, and the construction of new sections of carriageway.

Our core contributions included:

  • Earthworks and material management
  • RC foundations and tower crane bases
  • Deep drainage, including multiple attenuation storage, rising main and oil separation tanks
  • Archaeological attendance due to historic nature of the site
  • External works including rigid paving and new adopted carriageways

Challenges

Working in a busy city centre location presented several logistical and technical challenges throughout the project including:

  • Live Services

Multiple utilities beneath the site required detailed co-ordination and the use of vacuum excavation to safely expose and work around existing infrastructure.

  • Logistical Constraints

The city centre location presented significant logistical challenges, with strict planning conditions and minimal on-site storage.  This required close co-ordination with Kier, subcontractors and suppliers, to ensure smooth project sequencing and material handling.  Works were carefully managed to minimise disruption to surrounding businesses and the public, with proactive control measures in place for noise, dust, and managing public access.

  • Archaeology

With the prevalent historic nature of the site, archaeological attendances were required during excavation works, adding additional oversight and requiring flexibility in sequencing and method of works.

  • Gas Main Diversion

The discovery of a 24 inch low pressure gas main prompted design changes to below-ground structures, and a significant diversion through the site.  We provided the full enabling works for the diversion, including significant temporary works and complex excavations.
