Overview

We completed extensive groundworks for the new academy, emphasizing environmental impact management. Committed to low-carbon technology, the construction aimed for a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’. Finished in December 2021, the building promotes a holistic learning approach with easy access to outdoor spaces and abundant natural light. Our core contributions included:

  • Earthworks Cut & Fill
  • Stoning Up
  • Mass Concrete Foundations
  • Foul & Storm Drainage with Attenuation Tanks
  • Power-Floated Concrete Floor Slabs with Radon Barrier
  • External Hard Landscaping

Challenges

We devised specialist solutions to some of the challenges that faced the new timber frame building at Perry Court, including:

  • Minimising the Amount of Excavated Material Removed

Comprehensive earthworks modelling allowed Solum to successfully limit the amount of waste material sent to landfill, reducing our carbon footprint through fewer vehicle miles.

  • Careful Storage of Excavated Material

Using sophisticated software to calculate topsoil and subsoil volumes to accomplish storage of the excavated material. On-site surveying was incorporated to quantify stockpiles. Temporary stockpiles carefully stored on site to minimise disruption to site logistics and to ensure stability of formations and material during a particularly wet winter.

  • Reusing Excavated Material & Incorporating it into the New Design

Collaborated with Skanska on the landscaping works design to incorporate as much of the material as possible, adjusting levels and introducing bunding and features, where required.

  • Safeguarding Protected Trees

By creating footpaths with timber edging and incorporating a Cellweb layer mitigated the risk of root structure damage, allowing us to work around the trees carefully and preserve their protected status.

  • Ensuring Minimal Concrete Wastage

Solum minimised concrete wastage during the excavation of foundations to the rock layer at 1.8 meters depth by employing careful excavation techniques.
